Campus Update: March 13

The State of Idaho reported its first confirmed case of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) today, March 13 (). According to reports, this case does not increase the current risk level in Idaho, nevertheless, Lewis-Clark State College continues to monitor the situation closely and is committed to providing regular updates to the campus community. College Sponsored/Related Travel
All non-essential college sponsored/related travel has been suspended indefinitely. The President and Vice Presidents will make the determination of what is essential for their respective units. 

Personal Travel
LC State continues to encourage extreme caution when it comes to personal travel, including domestically. If you choose to travel to a country or a domestic area with widespread, sustained transmission, or sustained community spread as designated by the , we encourage you to self-quarantine for 14 days from the time you left these areas. Unless new information becomes available, the plan will be to return to normal delivery options on Wednesday, March 18, and continue through March 27. On March 30, which is the first day of Spring Break, LC State will officially transition to distance learning options for the remainder of the spring semester. Students who leave for Spring Break will be encouraged not to return to campus and to complete the semester remotely. Housing and food services for students who remain on campus will continue. Additionally, clean spaces, which will adhere to a strenuous cleaning and safety protocol, will be established on campus to accommodate students and coursework as deemed necessary.

Who is LC State partnering with to monitor coronavirus and be prepared?
Lewis-Clark State College is communicating and working closely with the State of Idaho, including the Idaho State Board of Education, the Idaho North Central District of Public Health, other postsecondary institutions, and others. Additionally, resources and contacts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are being utilized. 

What basic preventative steps is the college taking?
In accordance with its preparedness plan and guidance from health officials, LC State has initiated a number of preventative measures including extra cleaning of high-touch surfaces (e.g., door handles, railings, table tops) by custodial staff, supplying departments across campus with cleaning supplies to enable additional cleanup throughout business hours, and information about symptoms of a coronavirus infection and preventative measures have been distributed across campus. 

What basic preventative steps can faculty, staff and students take?
Basic preventative steps include washing hands often, practicing social distancing (keeping six feet between you and others), avoiding shaking hands, staying home if you are sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing a facemask if you are sick.

What is the current risk level in Idaho?

What is the college doing about travel?

If college students who are healthy have a low risk with coronavirus, why so many precautions?

Additionally, by working together proactively to implement the right precautions, LC State students, faculty and staff can make a difference in preventing and slowing the spread of the virus not only on campus but in our communities.

If campus were to close for any period of time, what about students living in residence halls?
Should campus close for any period of time, LC State would work closely with health officials to determine the best courses of action on a case-by-case basis. Plans are in place to ensure that services for residence hall students (e.g., food services) would continue without interruption. 

If campus were to close for any period of time, would non-instructional services still be available?

Is the college planning to cancel major campus events?
Each event will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Regarding commencement, students would still graduate and receive their diploma even if the ceremony were cancelled. 

What do you do if you think you have been exposed to coronavirus?
LC State’s Student Health Services is ready to serve students and employees. Anyone who feels they may have been exposed to the virus are asked to call 208-792-2251 immediately for guidance and information. 

Where can I stay informed on this situation?
Lewis-Clark State College continues to monitor the situation closely and is committed to providing regular updates to the campus community. Any urgent messages will be communicated immediately through the college’s Warrior Alert system. Other ways to stay informed include checking the and websites.

How will my financial aid be impacted if the college cancels face-to-face classes?
Should campus cancel face-to-face classes and move to online or another distance delivery of courses, students will be expected to complete all courses to retain financial aid eligibility. But, simply moving to a new delivery format will not adversely impact financial aid or scholarship eligibility. If a student is unable to complete the course(s), the Financial Aid Office will address each case individually to determine impact and future eligibility.

How will my financial aid be impacted if campus were to close for any period of time?
If the campus closes for any period of time, LC Financial Aid would work to be as flexible as permitted by federal and state regulations to reduce the impact on current and future financial aid eligibility. Institutional scholarships will not be adversely impacted. Students should continue to pursue their studies if the classes are offered via distance delivery or in an alternative format.

How will my work-study job be impacted if campus were to close for any period of time?
Should campus close for any period of time, students would need to work with the Financial Aid Office and their supervisor to determine the impact. During the test period next week (March 16-17), students can continue to work as normal.
